The Star Communications Feature Guide is designed to provide access to Star Communications feature descriptions, instructions, and pricing.

Individual Services

Call Waiting informs you when another caller is trying to reach you. Just listen for a brief tone signal that will indicate there is a caller on the other line. You can place the first call on hold to answer the second call.

Call Waiting is great for everyone. Even if you don't use the phone that often, you will not have to worry about someone calling and missing you that moment. Plus, it provides an extra benefit for parents of teenagers, roommates with one line, or home based businesses.

To answer a waiting call:

  1. When you're on the phone, a special tone tells you a second call is waiting.
  2. Simply press and quickly release the "switch hook" on your telephone. Your first caller is automatically placed on hold, while you're connected with the second caller. If you choose not to answer the incoming call: 1. You will hear a special tone to remind you of the incoming call.

To alternate between calls:

  1. Simply press the "switch hook". While you talk with one caller, the other will automatically be placed on hold. Each conversation will remain private.

To end either call:

  1. Hang up.
  2. Your phone will ring.
  3. When you answer, you'll be connected with the remaining caller.

When you know you do not want any interruptions while on an important call, Cancel Call Waiting is for you!

This feature is great for online service users, single fax line users or for people who enjoy Call Waiting, but they do not want to be disturbed while on another call.

To "turn off" Call Waiting before making a call:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *70. (on a rotary phone, dial 1170)
  3. Listen for a confirmation tone.
  4. Dial the telephone number you wish to call. Now, your call will not be interrupted by the Call Waiting tone. Other callers will hear a busy signal.
  5. After you hang up, Call Waiting automatically "turns on" again.

Quickly dial up to 30 of your most frequently called numbers! Just use a couple of digits and you're connected!

This is a wonderful service for parents who want their kids to have quick access to emergency numbers. Elderly or disabled individuals will also appreciate the ease of use.

To program your speed dial list:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *75. (On a rotary phone, dial 1175.)
  3. Listen for the dial tone.
  4. Dial a two-digit speed code. (Choose any number, 20 through 49.)
  5. Dial the telephone number you wish to assign to that speed code. (For long distance calls, be sure to include "1" plus the area code.)
  6. Press the # key. (On a rotary phone, wait four seconds after dialing.)
  7. Listen for the confirmation tone.

To call someone on your Speed Dialing List:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Dial the two-digit speed code, then press the #key. (On a rotary phone, wait four seconds after dialing.)

To change your Speed Dialing list:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *75. (On a rotary phone, dial 1175.)
  3. Listen for the dial tone.
  4. Dial the two-digit speed code you wish to change.
  5. Listen for the cancellation tone, then the dial tone. Follow steps 4-7 under "to program your Speed Dial list".

Three-Way Calling lets you add a third caller to a conversation you're already having without operator assistance.

It's great for community leaders who need to arrange meetings between people, teenagers, or when you just want to catch up with multiple friends or family at the same time.

Subscription Based Activation Instructions

To add a third person to the call:

  1. Press and quickly release the "switch hook" to place the first person on hold.
  2. Listen for the dial tone.
  3. Dial the second person's phone number. (If you have speed calling, you may dial one of your codes instead.)
  4. When the second person answers, you can talk privately before making it a three-way connection.
  5. To make the three-way connection, press and quickly release the "switch hook". You can now talk with both people at the same time.

To cancel the three-way connection:

  1. If the second person did not answer or you wish to disconnect them, just press and quickly release the "switch hook". You will be reconnected to the person holding.
  2. If either of the two people hang up, you can continue talking with the remaining person.

To end the call completely:

  1. Simply hang up.

Per Use Activation Instructions

To add a third person to the call:

  1. Make the first call and press and quickly release the "switch hook".
  2. Listen for the dial tone and press (*71) from your touchtone telephone.
  3. Dial the second person's phone number.
  4. When the second person answers, press and quickly release the "switch hook" or link/flash. You can now talk with both parties at the same time.

Easily dial your last caller even if you did not answer.

This is an ideal feature for someone who cannot afford to miss a call.

  • No need to rush to the telephone if a call is missed

If you couldn't get to the phone in time, you can still find out who called. Return the call by dialing *69.

How To Use:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the normal dial tone.
  2. If you were already on the phone and ignored the call waiting tone, press and quickly release the "switch hook".
  3. Press *69. (On a rotary phone, dial 1169.) After you dial *69, a recorded voice will give you the phone number of the call you missed and ask if you want to use the Call Return feature. Just follow the instructions.

If the line is busy:

  1. Hang up. Your phone will keep trying the line for up to 30 minutes.
  2. A special callback ring alerts you if the line becomes free. (Some phones ring normally.)
  3. Lift the handset to automatically place the call.

To cancel your Call Return request:

  1. Press *89. (On a rotary phone dial 1189.)
  2. Listen for the confirmation tone or announcement. Hang up.
    *Toll charges apply to long distance calls.
    *Does not apply to 800 numbers, 900 numbers, outside the specified service area, or lines where Call Forward and some other services have been activated, or when the calling party blocks their number.

Don’t waste time dialing busy numbers over and over, use Repeat Dialing and let your telephone dial it for you. Your phone rings as soon as the line is free and automatically connects you. An ideal feature for anyone who does not have time to keep dialing the same busy phone number.

Heavy telephone users such as sales people or secretaries will find this beneficial when making contact for appointments.

  1. When you hear a busy signal, press and release the "switch hook". Listen for a special tone.
  2. If you have already hung up, lift the handset and listen for a normal dial tone.
  3. Press *66. On a rotary phone, dial 1166.
  4. If the line is busy, hang up. Your phone will check the number for up to 30 minutes.
  5. A special ring back alerts you if the line becomes free (some phones ring normally).
  6. Lift the handset to automatically place the call.

To cancel your Repeat Dialing request:

  1. Depress the "switch hook" and release. Listen for a special dial tone.
  2. If you have already hung up, lift the handset and listen for normal dial tone.
  3. Press *86. (On a rotary phone, dial 1186.)
  4. Listen for the confirmation tone or announcement. Hang up.

Identify harassing callers. When you receive a harassing phone call, you can dial a simple code to trace the source of that call and it can be used by the police when necessary.

It's a great service to elderly people or anyone concerned about their privacy.

How to use:

  1. When you get a nuisance call, press and quickly release the "switch hook". Listen for a special dial tone.
  2. If you have already hung up, just lift the handset again and listen for a normal dial tone
  3. Press *57. (On a rotary phone, dial 1157.) After you dial *57, you will hear an announcement that the call can be traced. Just follow the voice instructions to dial an additional code, and the call will be traced.
  4. Listen for the confirmation announcement that the last call has been traced.
  5. Hang up.
  6. The number you traced will be recorded at the phone company. If you decide to follow up on this matter, Star Telephone will provide the number to the local authorities.
    *Call Trace must be used immediately after you hang up on the call you want traced. If you get another call, or hear a Call Waiting tone first, you will trace the wrong call.
    *Upon activating a trace, you must contact the phone company within one business day to initiate a Call Trace file.

Star’s voicemail service is an electronic system that can store messages from telephone callers that offers several advantages over answering machines. It allows incoming calls to be forwarded to your mailbox when you cannot or choose not to answer the phone.

There are numerous benefits to having this service. These consist of:

  • Answer calls when you’re on the phone or away.
  • Multiple callers can leave you messages without getting a busy signal.

  • Gives you security by requiring a PIN code to retrieve your messages.
  • Digital clarity. No tapes to wear out, nothing to break.

  • Internet users: Message Center answers all your calls while you are online.
  • Provides the time and date a message was sent to your mailbox.
  • Multiple boxes for each family member.
  • Receive voicemail messages in your email.
  • Administer your mailbox online.

VOIP Voicemail: $2.50

There are three ways to access your voicemail service.

  1. Press *99 when checking from your home telephone.
  2. Dial 910-NXX-9960. (Note: NXX is your telephone exchange.) Enter your 10-digit telephone number
  3. Dial your home or business number. Once the greeting begins press the # key.
 

Call Forwarding

Keep your mobility and let your calls follow you to another number. Each time a call is forwarded, your phone will make one short ring. It can still be used to make outgoing calls. This feature works well for people who are on call and do not want to be trapped by staying in one place.

Great for forwarding your telphone calls to your cell phone, while giving you extra security so no one knows you are not home. If you are a working parent and want to take care of any incoming home calls, but want to allow your kids to dial out, this is also great for you.

To activate the service:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dialtone.
  2. Press *72. (On a rotary phone, dial 1172.)
  3. Listen for the dial tone.
  4. Dial the number where you want your calls forwarded.
  5. When the phone is answered, your Call Forward is in effect.

If the line is busy, or there's no answer:

  1. Hang up.
  2. Press *73. (On a rotary phone. dial 1173.)
  3. Listen for the confirmation tone, then hang up. Your Call Forward is now "off", and calls will ring normally on your phone.

To change the "forward to" number:

  1. Turn off Call Forward.
  2. Repeat steps 1-5 above to turn on Call Forward, entering the new "forward to" number.
    *Dial the number as if you were calling directly. For a long distance number, dial "1" plus the area code.
    *Toll charges apply on long distance calls.

Decide which callers should follow you to another number. Program your phone to forward only calls from a special list of numbers to another number, such as your cellular phone. When your service is activated, calls from numbers in your forward list will be rerouted to your "forward to" number. All others will ring at your primary phone as usual.

Great for people who are on call at their place of employment, home based workers or cell phone users that only want to forward certain calls to their mobile phone.

How to use:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *63. (On a rotary phone, dial 1163.)
  3. Listen for an announcement telling you whether the feature is currently stored in your forward list.
  4. Follow the voice instructions and dial 3 to turn the feature ON (if it is currently off), or turn the feature OFF (if it is currently on).

To add the last caller to your forward list:

  1. Press #01#. (On a rotary phone, dial 1201.)

To enter your "forward to" number:

  1. The first time you activate the service, you will be asked to enter the number you would like your special calls forwarded to. From then on, the system will simply remind you of the current "forward to" number.
  2. If the current number is correct, dial 1.
  3. If you wish to change the current "forward to" number, dial 0 and then follow the voice instructions.

To hear the phone numbers in your list:

  1. Press 1. (On a rotary phone, dial 12.)
  2. Follow the voice instructions you will hear. You can store up to 30 numbers on your forward list.

To remove a number from your list:

  1. Press *. (On a rotary phone, dial 11.)
  2. Follow the voice instructions to remove any or all of those numbers from your forward list.

To hear the instructions again:

  1. Dial 0

When your line is busy, your callers still have another way to reach you with Call Forward Busy Line. You can have your incoming calls automatically forwarded when your line is busy to another number.

This feature is great if you are a heavy telephone user. Small businesses that don't want to miss an important call can have it forwarded to another telephone line for answering.

To "turn on" the service:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *90. (On a rotary phone, dial 1190.)
  3. Listen for the dial tone.
  4. Dial the number where you want your calls forwarded.
  5. When the phone is answered, your Call Forward is in effect.

If the line is busy, or there is no answer:

  1. 1. Hang up.
  2. Within two minutes, repeat steps 1-4 above. You will hear a confirmation tone, to let you know your Call Forward is now working.

To "turn off" the service:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *91. (on a rotary phone, dial 1191.)
  3. Listen for the confirmation tone, then hang up. Your Call Forward Busy is now "off".

To change the "forward to" number:

  1. Turn off Call Forward Busy.
  2. Repeat the steps above to turn on Call Forward Busy, entering the new "forward to" number.

Whenever you can't answer the phone, forward your calls to someone who can. If you can't get to the phone, you can be sure that your calls will not go unanswered. You can easily change the forwarding number, even choosing to forward the call after 18 seconds or 3 rings.

This feature works well for heavy telephone users or small businesses that have multiple telephone lines.

If the line is busy, or there is no answer:

  1. Hang up.
  2. Within two minutes, repeat steps 1-4 above. You will hear a confirmation tone, letting you know Call Forward is now working.

To "turn off" the service:

  1. 1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone. 2. Press *93. (on a rotary phone, dial 1193.) 3. Listen for the confirmation tone, then hang up. Your Call Forward No Answer is now "off".

To change the "forward to" number:

  1. 1. Turn off Call Forward No Answer. 2. Repeat the steps above to turn on Call Forward No Answer, entering the new "forward to" number.

To use Originating Call Management:

  1. Set up your account. Call us, and we'll help you create your first set of rules.
  2. Place your calls as usual. When a blocked number is dialed, just enter your PIN to continue. However, anyone who attemps a blocked call from your phone without a PIN will not be able to complete their call.

Manage your account. Use your phone to change your PIN, and activate or deactivate the feature.

Caller ID allows you to see the number of the party calling you, giving you the option of answering or not. To use Caller ID, you need a special display phone or a display add-on unit for your existing phone that will show the name and/or number.

This is ideal for security conscious individuals, business owners who would like to keep a call log, Voicemail users or any customer who does not want to be bothered by certain callers.

  • Displays all numbers except two-party and four-party service numbers or operated assisted calls

How to use:

  1. Wait for the phone to complete the first ring. The calling telephone name and/or number will appear on the display screen.
  2. If you choose to answer the call, the number will remain on the screen until you or the caller hangs up. Most Caller ID units store calling numbers for future reference.
    *If the letter "P" or Private, Anonymous or Blocked appears on your screen, the caller may have blocked the display of his or her name and/or number. You can choose whether to answer the call.
    *If "out of area" or "unavailable", or "unknown number" appears, the caller is using incompatible equipment or calling from an area in which the information is not available.
    *The caller's name will appear as the name associated with the calling number in the telephone company records. Not all phone companies from which calls originate will display name.

Cname allows you to see the name and number of the person calling before you answer the phone. When you receive a call, the number and the name of the party calling you is shown on your Caller ID display screen.

How to use:

  1. Like Caller ID, when you receive a call, wait until your telephone completes the first ringing signal.
  2. The telephone number and name of the party calling will automatically appear on your display screen if available.
  3. If you choose to answer the call, the number and name will remain on the screen until you or the caller hangs up.

Notes:

  • Subscription to Cname requires the lease or purchase of a display telephone or an add-on two-line display unit.
  • If the letter “P” or “Private” appears on your screen, the caller may have blocked the display of their number before placing their call. You can choose whether or not to answer the call.
  • If “unknown name,” “unknown number” or “out of area” appears, the caller is in an area that does not support Caller ID services.

Call Waiting-Caller ID makes deciding whether to switch over to a second call easy by combining two great features into one. See the number of the second caller without having to switch over.

How to use:

  1. Like Call Waiting, when you are on a call you will receive a special tone indicating a second call is waiting. Instead of switching over with the "switch hook" to identify the caller, you simply look at your Caller ID device where the telephone number (and name if you subscribe to Cname) will appear.
  2. If you choose to answer the call, as with Call Waiting, simply switch over by pressing and quickly releasing the "switch hook". This will leave the first call on hold until you return.

Notes:

  • You must subscribe to Call Waiting, Caller ID (Cname), AND Call Waiting-Caller ID.
  • You must lease or purchase a telephone or adjunct display device that is Call Waiting-Caller ID compatible.
  • If the letter "P" or "Private" appears on your screen, the caller may have blocked the display of their number before placing their call.
  • If the "unknown name", "unknown number" or "out of area" appears, the caller is in an area that does not support Caller ID services.

Personal Ring allows you to have a second phone number on a single phone line. When called, this second number has its own unique ring. Personal Ring is great for teenagers, roommates, or businesses. Create an individual identity with Personal Ring! You will know who the phone call is before before answering or looking.

To remove a number from your list:

Decide which calls you will take! You can program the phone to accept only those calls from a special list of people. When your service is activated, your phone will accept only calls from those in your Selective Call Acceptance list. All others will hear an announcement that you are not accepting calls at this time.

To "turn on" the service:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *64. (On a rotary phone, dial 1164.)
  3. Listen for an announcement telling you whether the feature is currently ON or OFF. The recorded voice will tell you how many (if any) numbers are currently stored in your acceptance list.
  4. Follow the voice instructions and dial 3 to turn the feature ON or OFF.

To add the last caller to your acceptance list:

  1. Press #01#. (On a rotary phone, dial 1201.)

To hear the phone numbers on your list:

  1. Dial 1.
  2. After the list is read, voice instructions will follow.

To remove a number from your list:

  1. Press *. (On a rotary phone, dial 11.)
  2. Follow the voice instructions to remove any or all of those numbers.

To hear the instructions again:

  1. Dial 0.

Don't let unwanted calls disturb you. You can program the phone to reject calls from any number you place in the rejection list. When your service is activated, any callers in the rejection list will hear an announcement that you are not accepting calls at this time. All others will ring through as usual.

Block your number from being displayed to others. By dialing a code before you place a call, you can prevent your number from appearing on the Caller ID display of the person receiving the call.

How to use:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *67. (On a rotary phone, dial 1167.)
  3. Dial the number you are calling as usual.
  4. The person you have called will not be able to see your number displayed on their telephone display screen. Instead, a "P" or "Private" will be displayed.
    *If you have requested Per-Line Blocking from your phone company, you do not need to dial a code to block your number each time.
    *To override Per-Line Blocking on an individual call, dial *82 before placing the call.

Refuse calls from those who have blocked their numbers. When you have activated this service, any callers who have blocked their number from your Caller ID display will hear an announcement that you do not accept anonymous calls and they should remove blocking and call back. All other calls will ring through as usual.
